In some cases you can also install carpet tiles over existing wood tile or vinyl flooring so long as the existing flooring is no more than an inch thick.

In this case the carpet is simply applied over the tiles without nailing or glue kind of like a wall to wall rug. Now it glides freely over the carpet and makes a statement in our family room. Depending on what type of carpet or padding is selected it will add some height to the floor. There is no reason that you cannot install carpet over tile floor and in fact there are a number of good reasons to consider doing exactly that.
