As the adhesive dries the clay will return to its normal state and the carpet will lay flat again. However some rugs can feel moist for up to 24 hours depending on the time of year and humidity. You may find that after just 8 to 12 hours a very damp carpet will begin to take on a musty or old smell. Many kinds of wood furniture will release some of the dyes in their stain if left in contact with a wet surface.

If your carpet presents ripples and buckles immediately after cleaning it is possible the carpet is not yet fully dry. Carpet is not intended to be saturated with large amounts of water nor is it meant to be damp or wet for long periods of time. You will not be able to move your furniture back into the room or walk across the floor until the carpet is dry. Water is necessary to get truly clean carpet and remove carpet stains but no one should have wet carpet for long after a professional cleaning.

However if your carpet is still wet the day after you have it professionally cleaned typically this is an indication that the company you hired did something wrong. Your carpet shouldn t feel underwater after a professional cleaning. Proper carpet cleaning performed by the vast majority of companies does not cause mold. In fact wet carpet can be more than an inconvenience.

If not dried properly the underlying material becomes susceptible to mildew problems which can cause the musty smell. The final carpet cleaning hazard is stains caused by furniture coming into contact with wet carpeting. To leave a carpet clean and not soaking wet after a professional cleaning takes that combination of experience to use the right amount of water to achieve a clean carpet and the dedication to spend enough time vacuuming off the excess water to leave the carpet not overly wet. Many pieces of furniture have feet that are at least partially metal.

It can damage your carpet and harbor mildew growth. The leading cause for a bad smelling carpet after cleaning is that the carpet backing absorbed some of the moisture in the process and is still wet. The metal can rust leaving a stain in the carpet. An interesting thing about latex glues of this sort when they are wet the glue is much weaker but after the glues dry out again they actually are structurally more sound than they were before they got wet.

So make sure that you dry the carpet well and the bad odour will disappear. Over wetting can also cause stains to wick up from the base of the carpet.
